Whole-Person Wellness and Suicide Prevention: Creating a Culture of Hope

I still remember sitting across from a colleague years ago who seemed to “have it all together.” On the outside, their career was thriving, they were constantly on the go, and their smile lit up every room. But one quiet conversation revealed something deeper: they were exhausted, disconnected, and quietly fighting thoughts of ending it all. That moment taught me what research confirms—suicide doesn’t always look like despair. Sometimes, it looks like the person who seems the strongest.
According to the World Health Organization, more than 700,000 people die by suicide each year worldwide. In the U.S., suicide is now one of the leading causes of death for people ages 10–34 (CDC, 2023). Behind each number is a story—a student overwhelmed by pressure, a parent stretched thin, an executive silently drowning under expectations.
So how do we turn the tide? For me, the answer lies in practicing and teaching whole-person wellness: caring for the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of our lives, not just one piece at a time.
Why Whole-Person Wellness Is Essential
Suicide prevention often gets discussed in terms of crisis intervention—and yes, those moments are critical. But what if prevention also looked like the everyday things that help us thrive?
-
Physical wellness: Sleep, movement, and nourishment directly influence our mental health. Exercise, for example, has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression by releasing endorphins and regulating stress hormones.
-
Emotional wellness: Learning to name and process emotions can keep them from building into overwhelming pain.
-
Mental wellness: Practicing mindfulness or reframing negative thought patterns can create resilience when life feels heavy.
-
Social wellness: Research shows that even one supportive relationship can cut suicide risk dramatically. Connection is not a luxury—it’s a lifeline.
-
Spiritual wellness: For many, purpose and meaning act as anchors in turbulent times. When life feels bigger than our struggles, hope has room to grow.
These dimensions work together. Neglect one, and the whole system feels the strain. Nurture them together, and we create the conditions for resilience.
A Personal Lens
I’ve seen this truth firsthand—not only in my professional work but in my personal journey. There were times when my own stress felt suffocating, when burnout was very REAL and very LOUD. What saved me wasn’t just “pushing through,” it was leaning into the practices of whole-person wellness: mindful breathing when my chest tightened, journaling when my emotions tangled, and reaching out to trusted friends and family when silence is my normal stress response.
And listen, to be VERY CLEAR, those choices didn’t erase the hard days, however, they gave me tools to navigate them—and reminded me that I wasn’t alone, that I was enough, and most of PURPOSED by God to be here. That’s what I now try to pass on to others: we can prevent despair from becoming the ONLY option by nurturing the whole self and embracing and building community is a part of that wholeness and wellness journey.
How We Can All Help
You don’t have to be a therapist or a wellness expert to make a difference. Prevention is something we can all take part in:
-
Check in deeply: Ask “How are you really doing?” and mean it. Listen without rushing to fix.
-
Encourage balance: Whether at home, in schools, or in the workplace, normalize rest and self-care as essential—not indulgent.
-
Share tools: Mindfulness, movement, creativity, and time in nature are accessible practices that regulate the nervous system and reduce stress.
-
Point to resources: Remind people that professional help is always available. Hotlines, therapists, and support groups save lives every day.
-
Model openness: When we’re honest about our own struggles, we give others permission to speak up before it’s too late.
My Role in This Work
Through my talks, workshops, and the WIRED for WELLNESS framework, I help people see wellness not as an add-on, but as a foundation for life. Whether I’m speaking to students navigating the “college jungle,” executives facing burnout, or parents juggling homeschool life, my goal is the same:
-
To help people recognize early warning signs of stress and burnout.
-
To give them practical tools to restore balance.
-
To build communities of belonging where no one feels invisible.
Whole-person wellness is NOT a cure-all, but it IS a prevention strategy. It builds resilience, fosters connection, and makes hope more accessible.
Closing
Suicide prevention starts with awareness, but it flourishes when we build a culture of wellness. When we see each other as whole beings—wired for connection, meaning, and growth—we reduce the silence that fuels despair.
If you or someone you love is struggling, please know: you are not alone. Hope is not just possible—it is within reach.
