Ubuntu: The African Philosophy That Could Transform How We Think About Wellness and Community
Introduction
After returning from our 30-day family scouting trip in South Africa, there is one concept that continues to stay with me.
It’s a philosophy that reshaped how I think about wellness, relationships, and even society as a whole.
It’s called Ubuntu.
And in many ways, it feels like something the modern world may need to rediscover.
What Is Ubuntu?
Ubuntu is a traditional African philosophy rooted in Bantu cultures of Southern Africa, particularly among the Zulu and Xhosa people.
It is often summarized as:
“I am because you are.”
But the original phrase is:
Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu
Which translates to:
A person is a person through other people.
This idea is simple, yet deeply profound.
It suggests that our humanity is not something we develop in isolation —
it is something that is shaped through connection, relationship, and community.
Ubuntu and Whole-Person Wellness
As someone who teaches whole-person wellness, Ubuntu resonated with me on a deeper level.
Because true wellness is not just:
• physical
• mental
• emotional
• or spiritual
The one that is often missed is that it is also relational.
Ubuntu reminds us that:
• Our wellbeing is connected to the wellbeing of others
• Our healing is connected to community
• Our growth is influenced by the environments we live in
In other words…
We do not thrive alone
What We Observed in South Africa
During our time in South Africa, we experienced glimpses of this philosophy in everyday life.
In the way people greeted one another.
In the way community showed up for each other.
In the sense that people belonged to something larger than themselves.
And while no place is perfect, there was a noticeable cultural thread of connection that felt different.
It made us reflect on how we think about community back home.
A Philosophy Rooted in Humanity
Ubuntu is not just a cultural idea — it is a way of being.
It teaches that:
• Humanity is shared
• Dignity is collective
• Flourishing is interconnected
And perhaps most importantly…
A person becomes a person through other people.
Final Reflection
After spending 30 days in South Africa, one realization continues to echo:
True wellness — both personal and societal — is deeply connected to community.
Ubuntu reminds us that:
“I am because you are.”
And maybe, in a world that often prioritizes independence above all else…
this is a truth worth remembering.
